SEO Basics: Search Engines For Beginners

Updated: Jun 8

Suppose SEO was a formula, SEO Results = Search Engine Understanding x Website/Content Optimization. What this means is, your SEO success is determined by how well you understand search engines. To break that down a little further, the better you know search engines, the better you will optimize your website and content.

Search engines are essentially fact finders. What works on Google tends to work on other search engines. That’s why most pros focus on Google Optimization. Google works by crawling, indexing, and ranking information according to keywords. The specific steps are as follows:

  1. Crawling: The Googlebot visits new/updated pages and adds them to the index.

  2. Indexing: Algorithms take into account user demand and perform quality checks.

  3. Ranking: The end product is an up or downgraded ranking on the SERP page.

How Google Finds Websites

Google uses a series of algorithms to rank web pages on their SERPs. Google aims to measure the importance of a website. It does this by counting the number and quality of links to a page, among many other things (see below). Doing this gives Google a reasonable estimate of how important a website is.

Google Algorithm (SEO)

SEO pros are not magicians, and there are things we can and can’t control. However, a sure-fire way to boost your SEO ranking is to produce high-quality backlinks, deliver world-class content and have a well-organized website.

If you remember nothing else, remember that SEO is all your actions to make, so Google considers your website a quality source of information.
