SEO Basics: What Is SEO?

Updated: Jun 8

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In layman’s terms, SEO is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a website. Professional SEO strategies aim to get a website to appear high on the search engine results page (SERP). This is because the higher a website ranks on the SERP, the more likely users will be to click through to the site.

Search Engine Results Page (SERP)

SEO dates back to the 90s when search engines first appeared. However, in today’s hyper-online world SEO is an essential component in every marketing strategy.

Companies that invest in SEO have higher SERP rankings, meaning they attract more attention from prospective and existing customers. Everyday SEO tasks include:

  • Creating high-quality content that is keyword optimized.

  • Building backlinks.

  • Sticking to SEO best practices.

Keywords are essential as you get “free” traffic to your site, month after month.

SEO focuses only on organic search results and does not include PPC or paid optimization. When we combine SEO and PPC, they form the parts that makeup Search Engine Marketing.

In other words:

SEO is all about improving a site’s rankings in the organic (non-paid) section of the search results.
